Back to Eden Bakery Cafe Grand Opening!

What a crazy summer it’s been! So much so that we forgot to officially let you all know that we opened our new bakery cafe! But the good thing about our soft opening is we’ve been able to work out the kinks and gear up for a busy fall and winter. Now let's call in rain!

So, it’s true! We grew into a whole new beautiful cafe space and we are so happy to be able to share it with you. For years folks have asked for more seating and more savory food options, so to now see that in fruition is beyond heartening. In case you haven’t visited since we opened on July 19th, you will first notice that we have moved all of our morning pastries, savory options and the bulk of our coffee operation into the new cafe. This gave us the opportunity to add a third soft serve flavor (like this week's Coconut Lime) and more dessert options for you to choose from!

While they are separate spaces with distinctly different menus, we invite you to bring your desserts into the new cafe when seating is scarce in the dessert bar. Come inside and you will find our new cafe to be spacious, airy and bright with plenty of room for you and your friends!

Now that we have had some time to get our systems dialed in and the summer is largely behind us, we are kicking off the fall with an official Grand Opening Party! It just so happens that Thursday, September 21st doubles as our 8 Years-Doing-Business-On-Alberta-Street Anniversary so we are intent on making it a special event and we would so love for you to be there! If you've been curious about Back to Eden's new savory dinner menu, don't miss out on this event as we'll be serving up our seasonal pizzas by the slice at half price! Wash it all down with discounted draft beers and cider - 100% vegan and gluten free from start to finish.

We're proud to be carrying Wild Craft cider - a community based, botanical cider company located in Eugene, OR.

Of course we’ll be treating our customers especially well all day, but the real festivities will be from 4pm to 10pm and will include a live broadcast with music from XRAY.FM. There will also be an opportunity for you to be swarmed by a playpen of adoptable dogs for a small donation to One Tail at a Time no-kill dog rescue. The Oregon Justice Resource Center will tabling to introduce you to the important work that they are doing to reimagine and transform our criminal justice system. All proceeds will go to these three great non-profits and we hope that you will join us in celebration of what community can do together.

Before we leave you to the rest of your day we assume you want to know all about the new menus and there is no one better to give you that scoop than our Executive Chef and Culinary Director himself Garrett Jones. So we are going to let him fill you in on that himself.

Thank you for your time and support and we will see you on September 21st or some point later on down the road!

Wishing you all the best!

Back to Eden Bakery

Greetings Friends!

Expanding next door into our new café space gave me the opportunity I had been dreaming of for quite some time, to bring Back to Eden’s wholesome, savory food to our customers and the PDX community in a way we hadn’t been able to do until now. Brunch seemed like the natural place to start since Portland lacked an all vegan gluten-free 7 day a week brunch destination and so many people already know us for our morning offerings. Ultimately I wanted to create a comforting and simple menu that would leave you feeling nourished and satisfied to start your day.

When it came to offering a modest dinner menu pizza felt like a natural fit as well as personally fulfilling as a chef and baker. Around the time that we transitioned to gluten-free in 2012 I started working on a GF pizza crust for my friends and family that needed to eat less wheat/gluten. Over the course of 4+ years I had it almost perfected. After partnering with my long time culinary collaborator Torri Rubi, we worked to take the crust to the next level by adding a house-made GF sourdough starter and a few execution details to create the perfect gluten-free pizza crust.

While our crust is a take on pan pizza our toppings are all about being vegan and plant-based. With such an abundance of vegan pizza options in Portland that allow you to add vegan cheese and all kinds of toppings I wanted to do something a little more curated. So our dinner menu provides 6 different “chef inspired” pizzas to choose from that focus on one primary seasonal ingredient with thoughtfully chosen toppings to compliment it.

It was important to me that all of our sauces, cheeses, and toppings be made from scratch and not come from a jar, can or bag so every component of our pizza is prepared in house. This is why we take such pride in the pizzas we now offer and we hope you will appreciate the intention behind this menu. Most of our pizzas will change seasonally which not only gives us the opportunity to work with locally sourced ingredients but it also provides you, our customer, with a new culinary experience throughout the year in the form of a one-of-a-kind pizza! I look forward to all the creative possibilities this affords and to provide Portland’s robust pizza scene with a fresh, new perspective!

Hope to see you soon!
Warmest regards,

Garrett Jones
